چکیده

We summarize the results of BeppoSAX ToO observation of blazars that were known to be in a high state from observations carried out in the optical or X-ray or TeV bands. In some of the sources observed, two spectral components were detected, which are interpreted as synchrotron and inverse Compton emission, respectively. Fast variability was detected in three sources (ON231, BLLac and S5 0716+714), but always only for the synchrotron component. Most of the triggers are from optical observations, consequently most of the sources observed are LBL or intermediate objects. They were in a high state in the X-ray band, but not in an exceptionally high state. No strong shift in the synchrotron peak frequency are reported. This is in line with the findings that the synchrotron peak frequency is more variable for HBL objects, i.e. sources that have this peak at higher energies.

PROGRESS IN UNDERSTANDING BLAZARS FROM BeppoSAX OB- SERVATIONS

Results obtained with BeppoSAX observations of blazars within various collaborative programs are presented. The spectral similarity “paradigm”, whereby the spectral energy distributions of blazars follow a sequence, leading to a unified view of the whole population, is briefly illustrated. We concentrate on recent observations of flares and associated spectral variability long for three objects...

The Last Gift of Bepposax: Pds Observations of the Two Blazars 1es 0507-040 and Pks 1229-021

Towards the end of the BeppoSAX mission, the only operated Narrow Field Instrument was the PDS, which covers the energy range 13-300 keV. Two blazars, 1ES 0507-040 (z = 0.304) and PKS 1229-021 (z = 1.045), suitably located in the sky for BeppoSAX pointing, were observed for about 2 days each in Spring 2002 with the PDS and detected up to 50 keV. 1ES0507-040 had been already observed by the Bepp...

Probing the physics of relativistic jets through X-ray observations

The broad band sensitivity and flexibility of the BeppoSAX satellite have allowed unprecedented studies of the X-ray emission from blazars. Here we focus on recent results on the SEDs of a group of blazars with emission lines, allowing to estimate both the luminosity in the jet and the luminosity of the accretion disk. Implications for the origin of the power carried by relativistic jets are co...

Recent highlights in the X-ray study of blazars

Blazars exhibit flux and spectral variations of largest amplitude at the highest frequencies. Therefore, monitoring their variability at Xand γ-rays is the most effective tool to peer into the mighty powerhouse of these sources. High energy observations of the brightest blazars with the latest generation of satellites have allowed a detailed study of their behavior and have critically improved ...

Looking for High Energy Peaked Blazars

Blazars can be classified on the basis of their overall Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). BL Lac objects are usually divided in LBL or HBL (Low or High energy peaked BL Lacs), according to the peak frequency of the synchrotron emission, if in the optical or UV–soft-X band respectively. FSRQs instead are characterized by synchrotron peaks mainly at IR–optical frequencies, similarly to LBLs. He...
